Mauterndorf is located exactly half way
between Klagenfurt and Salzburg airports and takes approximately 1
hour 30 minutes to drive from either. Ryanair has a daily flight to
Klagenfurt and twice daily flights from Stanstead to Salzburg. www.ryanair.com In addition
there are a number of charter companies who fly to Salzburg both
summer and winter. Check westernair.co.uk or inghams.co.uk or in
winter www.flybe.com or www.ski-flights.com Transfers
can be arranged and we will assist with this where
necessary.
There are some driving
details which you need to be aware of when driving to Wendys in
Mauterndorf.
If you
intend to use Austrian Motorways and expressways your vehicle
must display a motorway tax sticker (vignette). These stickers,
valid for a year, two months or 10 days, can be purchased at many
petrol stations close to the border in neighbouring countries, at
the frontier in Austria, or in AMTC offices.
They are fairly inexpensive.
Visibility
vests are compulsory and must be worn if walking on a
motorway, or anywhere if broken down under a red warning triangle,
or on the highway in bad visibility.
Warning triangle is
compulsory.
First-aid kit must be
carried
Headlamp converters are compulsory
Documentation: always carry your driving licence,
vehicle registration document (V5), and certificate of motor
insurance. If your licence does not incorporate a photograph ensure
you carry your passport to validate the licence.
Austria has strict drink driving laws,
only allowing 0.25 milligrams of alcohol per litre of blood -
stricter than the UK where the limit is 0.4.
Speed limits, shown below,
are implemented rigorously. Radar traps are frequent in Austria, and
heavy on-the-spot fines can be levied.
Speed Limits are
130km/h on motorways, 100km/h on open roads and 50km/h in towns and
villages.
This is not a complete list of the
driving rules for Austria and you should check the regulations
before you leave.
After you have purchased a
vignette, the motorways are essentially free. However, some of the
tunnels are not. The Tauern tunnel and the Katchberg tunnel both
have a small charge. Both tunnels can be avoided when driving to
Mauterndorf but they require you to use the mountain passes. While
these roads are normally always open in the winter, they often
require the use of snow tyres or chains or both. If your vehicle is
not so equipped DO NOT take the risk! Use the motorway and
tunnels.
Arriving from the North
(Salzburg) or South (Klagenfurt/Graz) using the motorway
and tunnels. Exit the A10 at St.Michael (Sankt Michael im Lungau).
This is important; when you get to the pay tolls,
stay in the far right hand lane; you do not pay at the main toll
barriers, drive past them and pay at the St Michael toll which is a
few hundred yards further on and out of sight.
For the adventurous and thrill
seekers; use the mountain passes and assuming your vehicle is
capable then follow these directions.
From the South, leave the A10,
signposted Katschberg/St.Michael. This exit is just before you get
to the Katschberg Tunnel. Follow this road all the way up to the
summit at 1600 metres and down the other side. Be careful it's steep
in places. Then follow the signs to Mauterndorf and
Tamsweg.
From the North, leave the A10
signposted Radstadt and follow this road all the way to Radstadt and
then follow the signs to Obertauern. This is a spectacular, and in
places, dangerous road. take it easy. Follow all the way up to
Obertauern to a height of 1800 metres and down the other side
towards Tweng and Mauterndorf.
Wendys is located in the centre of
Mauterndorf. From the church front door looking towards the
mountain and with the supermarket on your right, it
is 150 metres on the left.
